When to Donate, Sell, or Upcycle Outgrown Items
Decide on an item’s fate only after your child has stopped engaging with it for at least three months, barring developmental readiness. Donate outgrown items that are complete, clean, and functional to local shelters or libraries, especially board books, puzzles, or classic building sets. Sell high-value, gently used brands or collectible lines, like wooden trains or modular blocks, through resale apps, but only if you have time to photograph and ship; otherwise, bundle them for a garage sale. Upcycle broken or single-piece items—turn stray figurines into garden markers, or transform missing-piece puzzles into art or gift tags. Avoid storing “just in case” toys past one year; if it hasn’t been requested by then, it’s clutter. Process every category immediately after rotation, not when the toy is needed again.
Outgrown toys should be donated if usable, sold if valuable and you have time, or upcycled if damaged—never kept past a year of disuse.
